Moonrise on the Manning Original Oil on Board 75cm x 26cm

John’s Inpsiration: “It’s been a busy day for our campers, setting up camp, fishing, swimming and exploring the river. They’ve turned in for the night and the campfire is slowly dying down, shortly to be no more than a few glowing embers. A gentle breeze ruffles the surface of the river, creating a shimmering path of light for the moon and the campfire: a perfect end to a perfect day. Soon the moon will rise fully, casting a silvery glow over the landscape.

The scene is set on the Manning river in New South Wales in early spring with its crisp nights and balmy days.

The Manning river rises below mount Barrington on the north eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range. It flows generally southeast, descending 1500 metres over its 261 kilometre course from the high upper reaches through the Manning valley and out to sea. The river flows past the towns of Wingham and Taree. It is one of Australia’s few large river systems that have not been dammed for water supply purposes anywhere along its catchment. It’s also one of the only few Australian mainland rivers to receive an annual winter flush from melting snow”.
