Robyn’s Inspiration:- “The underwater world and its inhabitants is a place of continual fascination for me. I am always enthralled by its colour, strange creatures and landscape formations. It’s my regret that I did not begin painting this a long time ago. As it is I only took up snorkeling 6 years ago and strangely I am quite afraid of water, having nearly drowned as a young girl. I love this fascinating habitat so much and really wanted to paint it so I overcame my fear late in life in order to represent this world on canvas. Fortunately for me I much prefer to paint the shallows as the deeper the water gets, the darker and bluer it becomes. The wonderful rainbows that dance on the sand retreat and the interesting plant life and animal life are lost to a blue gloom. These beautiful Cow-Tailed Rays seem to like the shallows of Lady Elliot Island. They are often seen lying quietly in particular spots, covered with sand as they rest. They are wonderful to paint because of the light that often dances along their bodies and their beautiful rippled tails. They are graceful animals with large eyes like a human that seem to see your very soul”.
