Splash of Red (Red-Browed Finches) Original Watercolour on museum board 18.8cm x 27cm

Frances’s Inspiration: ” Jerrabomberra Wetlands in Canberra is one of my favourite bird watching spots, due in part to the large numbers of Red-browed Finches that make it their home. For a fleeting moment these lovely birds flew out of the cover in the early morning light and posed beautifully.  It’s interesting how the colours of birds are often unintentionally repeated in the background. In this case, the background of my reference photo was a pale lemony-green with faint grey branches; a perfect match for the birds. I’ve always loved adding splashes of red in a painting. It brings a painting to life and is a welcome complimentary to green. Red- browed Finches are the most common native finch seen around Canberra, but that doesn’t diminish their charm in any way. They prefer wetter, thicker and greener habitat than other finches and prefer to have some dense cover”.
