Spinifex Sovereigns (Spinifex Pigeons) Original Acrylic on Claybord 50.8cm x 40.6cm

Greg’s Inspiration: “For this painting, I wanted to capture the character of the Australian inland — the rich red earth, rugged ranges, pale grasses and hardy trees that define so much of the
outback. The Spinifex Pigeons felt perfectly suited to that setting, with their warm earthy colouring echoing the landscape itself. I liked the idea of painting them as a pair, quietly alert and at ease in their environment, while the dramatic cliffs and open country behind them help create a sense of place. Their elegant crests and subtle patterning bring a surprising beauty to what is often seen as a harsh and unforgiving landscape.

The Spinifex Pigeon (Geophaps plumifera) is a distinctive ground-dwelling pigeon found across arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. It is especially associated with rocky country, spinifex grasslands and rugged ranges, where its colouring provides excellent camouflage among the stones and dry grasses. Easily recognised by its tall, delicate crest, chestnut plumage and striking facial markings, the Spinifex Pigeon is usually seen walking or running on the ground rather than flying for long distances. It feeds mainly on seeds and is often found near water or sheltered rocky areas. Beautifully adapted to the inland, it is one of the most characteristic birds of Australia’s desert country.”
