Robyn’s inspiration for this painting:”When looking at the face of this beautiful fish it is hard to comprehend how amazing it is. I have had it in mind to paint this subject for years but due to the complexity I have put it aside many times. However I really wanted to do something a bit different for the Festival of Two Palettes so I decided to bite the bullet and paint it. It took a long time – many many hours of drawing in and painting and this is the result. I think it will be a long time before I tackle complex coral like it again”.
The Moorish Idol is a beautiful tropical species that has a very long, white dorsal fin. The species is commonly seen by divers in the tropics but also occasionally in temperate waters.
This species has a widespread Indo-Pacific distribution in tropical and some temperate waters. In Australia it is known from the central Western Australian coast, around the tropical north and south to southern New South Wales. It can be found from the shallows to depths in excess of 180 m.
