Frances’s Inspiration: ”During a recent guided bird photography tour to the NT, I was amazed by how common these stunning birds were. Needless to say, I took many hundreds of photographs. It’s difficult to capture in paint the glowing colours of these birds, particularly when caught in sunlight. I particularly love the combination of sky blue with cinnamon. Like all bee-eaters, rainbow bee-eaters are very social birds. When they are not breeding, they roost together in large groups in dense undergrowth or large trees. Rainbow bee-eaters eat mostly flying insects but have a particular taste for bees. Even though they are immune to the stings, they will remove the sting by rubbing the bee against their perch. Sexes are similar at first glance. However, males have longer central tail “streamers” than females”.
