“Observers” (Kookaburras) Original Acrylic on Linen 65cm x 40cm – SOLD
Stephen’s Inspiration: “Inspired by the life and behaviours of a pair of Iconic Australian Kookaburras, based on their tendencies to mate for life, defend their territory, and engage in co-parenting. Kookaburras are known for forming strong monogamous bonds. Once a pair is established, they tend to stay together for life (around 10-20 years), sharing the responsibilities of raising their feathered family.
Being famous for its distinctive calling. Their famous laughter isn’t just for amusement; it serves a bigger purpose. Kookaburras use their distinctive calls not only to communicate with each other but also to establish and defend their territory.
Despite their jovial demeanor, they are highly skilled hunters with great eyesight. This allows them to spot prey from great distances. Their keen vision, coupled with a patient attitude, makes them efficient hunters in the wild.
Known as “perch and pounce” predators, with this painting I wanted to see a pair of kookaburras taking in the familiar surroundings while perched among the canopy of a gum tree. Out of site and almost motionless on the high branches, with a small movement in the grass down below. With an attentive look they are both quick to turn to see what it is that maybe moving in the distance.
Their ideal target being anything from a reptile to a small mammal, insects or invertebrates. The kookaburras potential next snack is unaware of what is above watching and waiting for that perfect time to swoop down for a precise strike”.
