“Morning Snack”(Gang Gang) Original Acrylic on Stretched Cotton Canvas 61cm x 76cm – SOLD

Stephen’s Inspiration: “The dewy morning making way for a very hungry Male Gang Gang Cockatoo enjoying one of his favourite snacks. Unmistakably in colour with its mild grey colour and distinctive red fluffy crown. In the wild it is easily identified by its distinctive call, which is described as resembling a creaky gate , or the sound of a cork being pulled from a wine bottle. With a passion for wildlife, I could not resist in capturing such a beautiful charismatic bird in a painting and bringing it to life on the canvas. Painting the Gang Gang in a larger portrait style work, I primarily wanted to make sure it remained the main focal point of the painting and for the viewer to see it in its full glory. With this I was able to have a heavy focus with intricate detailing its distinctive layers of feathers creating its unique colour combination and overall appearance”.

Gang-gangs are endemic to coastal regions of south-eastern Australia. They used to inhabit King Island off of Tasmania, but have become extinct there. Now due to the reduction of its natural habitat as a result, the gang-gang is now listed as vulnerable in New South Wales.

“Morning Snack” was selected as a finalist in The Holmes Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art 2023,  a distinguished art prize Australia wide with only 40 artworks selected as finalists.
