John’s Inspiration: –This stunning painting shows a section of the river in its calm and peaceful locations. The view is framed with the placement of large old man gum on the left and smaller on the right.The Macleay River is said to be the second fastest running river in the world. In its upper reaches it passes through some rugged landscapes and gorges creating spectacular waterfalls in the Cunnawarra and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks. The Macleay and Apsley valleys became a stock route between the New England Tableland and the coast in 1840. Rough grazing has continued in the Macleay Gorges since then but locations like this the valley flats are rich and fertile.
