Happy at Home (Sulphur-crested cockatoo) Original Acrylic on Pastelbord 50cm x 40cm

Natalie’s Inspiration: “A couple of years ago a friend shared with me a beautiful photo of a sulphur-crested cockatoo peeking out of a tree hollow. The subtle colours in the image inspired me to create a painting that replicated the scene but adding my own artistic flair.  I love how all Aussie gum trees are unique in their colour, shape and texture.

Manipulated by the environment, including extreme weather cycles, insects and animals that live amongst them…. they all have a story to tell. This painting shares a moment of connection between a sulphur crested cockatoo and its dependency on the perfect tree hollow to nest in. I feel that the tree is just as much an important feature in this painting as the cockatoo”.

Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are such a common sight in Australia that their beauty is often taken for granted.  They are usually seen in flocks of 10 to 1000 birds, foraging together or flying over plains-with their noisy screech.  In other countries it can be found in most zoos and well-stocked aviaries.  It is also popular as a pet.  Wherever they inhabit open ground they have a well-established “Sentinel warning system”.  While the main flock is feeding on the ground, a few birds perch watchfully in trees and screech loudly at the approach of an intruder.  The entire flock immediately rises into the air.

Each flock has its own roosting site, which is rarely deserted even if the cockatoos have to fly long distances to feeding grounds.  As evening falls the noise in the roosting trees is deafening as the birds, jostle for positions and squabble with one another, and it is long after sunset before the screeching subsides.  Soon after sunrise the noise starts up again as the birds fly off to feed.
