Gums of the Flinders Original Oil on Board 60cm x 45cm
John’s Inspiration:-Set in the beautiful Flinders Ranges of South Australia, the painting depicts two of the magnificent gums for which the area is well known.
The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain ranges in South Australia which starts about 200 kilometres north of Adelaide. The range stretches for over 430 kilometres from Port Pirie to lakeCallabonna. The most well known landmark is Wilpena Pound, also known as Ikara. The background of the painting shows a section of wilpena Pound, a formation which creates a natural Amphitheatre covering 80 square kilometres and containing the ranges’ highest peak, St Marys peak at 1171 metres.
The first 3 pastoral leases in the Central Flinders Ranges were only marked out in 1851. These were Wilpena, Arkaba, and Aroona which were developed as sheep stations. The government of the Colony of South Australia regarded these areas as unoccupied wastelands.
During my many visits to the Flinders I would often encounter sheep in small numbers wandering around. I would assume these had escaped from the main flock and were simply foraging on what little they could find. I’ve included three sheep as part of the focal point in the painting.
The two guns flank a dry Creek bed which has very different colour to the surrounding countryside due to the silt washed down after heavy rains and flooding.
