Going Home Sofala Original Oil on Stretched Canvas 76.2cm x 50.8cm

John’s Inspiration: “Sofala is a former gold mining town 259 kilometres west of Sydney. The town is situated on a bank of the Turon River and was named in 1853 after the famous gold producing district of Sofala in Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique). In its heyday, the population was estimated at 30,000 Diggers and 10,000 Chinese, catered for by thirty hotels and grog shanties. Today Sofala is a very peaceful place with a population of about 120 and although the village is classified by the National Trust, some of its timber buildings are in a state of disrepair, luckily the brick and better-built establishments are still standing.”
