Filtered Light Original Oil on Board 41cm x 51cm by Kevin Best – SOLD

This painting is one of Kevin Best’s, classic works, with shafts of light filtering down through the mist to give this painting “back lighting” something, which Kevin was famous for.  As the name suggests, “back lighting” is where light falls on the middle ground and background in the scene.  It allows areas within the picture to be lit up and highlighted using light as opposed to say bright colours.  This process adds enormous depth to a scene.  Art is all about giving people the opportunity to come home after having a hard day at the office and letting them sit in their lounge room with something to drink and looking at their investment and saying “That’s where I would like to be”.

It tells the story of life in the high country of Australia.  At Easter each year the cattlemen of northeastern Victoria muster their cattle on the high plains and bring them down to the valleys to avoid the harsh winter snows.  Attracted by the romance and tradition, the artist spent many days in the high country in order to absorb the atmosphere of this event.  Kevin used as inspiration for this painting, a mob he found that had come down from the high snow country of the Victorian Alps.  “It is something about the country – the clean air, the awesome beauty of the place.  Then there is the loneliness, not unpleasant, but haunting, mysterious and fascinating.

Kevin is renowned for his use of light in his works, rays of light, mists, sun, rises and sun sets.  Other artist’s say his signature is light.  Many people have been touched by the beauty of Kevin’s work – the rays of light streaming through the gum trees look like fingers of God.  Kevin believed that the greatest teacher is nature itself.  Little wonder that his paintings radiate light and subtle moods of the great variety of scenes in this great country.  With no outside training his natural ability has taken the form of “feeling” on canvas and he would sit under a big gum tree soak up the atmosphere and every facet of the landscape and creatures before him.
