Desert Princess (Princess Parrot) Original Acrylic on Claybord 61cm x 91cm

Greg’s Inspiration: “I have always been drawn to the delicate beauty of the Princess Parrot and wanted to place it in a setting that echoed both its elegance and its quiet mystery. The soft pink hop bush flowers, red inland hues and dramatic evening sky allowed me to build a sense of atmosphere around the bird, while the vivid greens, blues and pinks of its plumage gave the painting its energy. I love the contrast between the bird’s refined beauty and the vast, remote feeling of the landscape beyond. For me, this painting was about celebrating one of Australia’s most beautiful yet mysterious parrots.

The Princess Parrot (Polytelis alexandrae) is a striking parrot native to the arid interior of Australia. Also known as Alexandra’s Parrot, it is known for its long tail, graceful
build and beautiful pastel colouring, with shades of green, blue and pink. Princess Parrots are usually found in remote desert and semi-arid regions, often moving nomadically in search of food and water. They favour spinifex country, shrublands and woodland edges, and feed on seeds, fruits, blossoms and other plant material. Elusive and not often seen, the Princess Parrot has become one of Australia’s most admired inland birds, prized for both its rarity and its remarkable beauty.
