“Dawn Light – Bay of Fires” (St Helens, Tasmania)  Original Oil on Canvas Board 61cm x 41cm

Robyn’s inspiration for this painting “This painting was inspired by a recent painting workshop I took as tutor to Tasmania. Part of the trip included a visit to The Bay of Fires at St Helens. The colours of the coastal area were stunning – turquoise water – orange red rocks, blue sky and white sand. It was a feast of colour and light, crying out to be painted. This painting was done in the studio on my return but I painted several en Plein Air which were purchased on the spot by locals. The weather at the time was perfect with lots of sun creating the dancing light on he sand beneath the water which I love to paint. It is often a feature of my underwater paintings.

The area features iconic orange-lichen-covered boulders contrasting with white sand and blue water. It includes a mix of rocky headlands and sandy beaches.  The Bay of Fires extends from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north.  The name, given by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773, is believed to refer to the many Aboriginal fires he saw along the coast. In the 2000s, the Bay of Fires received several tourism accolades. In 2005, it was named as the world’s second best beach by Condé Nast. In 2008, it was named the world’s “hottest” travel destination for 2009 by international guide book Lonely Planet”.
