Crimson in the Snow (Crimson Rosella) Original Acrylic on Claybord 46cm x 61cm – SOLD
Greg’s Inspiration: “For this painting, I wanted to place the Crimson Rosellas in a setting that felt unexpected and dramatic. I have always loved the striking contrast of their rich red and blue plumage, and setting them against snow gave me a way to heighten that beauty even further. The cold, shadowy forest and weathered fallen timber create a quiet, almost hushed atmosphere, while the birds bring warmth and life into the scene. I liked the idea of showing these familiar Australian parrots in a wintry environment, where their colour becomes even more intense and luminous against the subdued tones of snow, ice and dark bushland.
The Crimson Rosella, Platycercus elegans, is one of Australia’s most recognisable parrots, found mainly in eastern and south-eastern Australia. It is known for its brilliant crimson plumage, vivid blue cheeks and wings, and long elegant tail. Crimson Rosellas are commonly seen in forests, woodlands, mountain habitats and gardens, where they feed on seeds, fruits, blossoms and insects. They are often encountered in pairs or small groups and are especially at home in cooler upland forests. Beautiful, bold and unmistakable, the Crimson Rosella is one of the most colourful and admired parrots in Australian birdlife.”
