A Moment of Stillness (Gouldian Finches) Original Acrylic on Claybord 30.5cm x 40.6cm

Greg’s Inspiration: “In this painting I wanted to capture the vivid beauty of Gouldian Finches gathering at a quiet outback waterhole. I remember seeing these, and other species of finch at a waterhole on a trip up to the north of Australia and thinking that their extraordinary colours almost seem unreal. I liked the idea of setting those brilliant reds, purples, greens and yellows against the warm earth tones of inland Australia. I also wanted to create a real-life dynamic amongst the group – the two outer birds quietly watching for any impending danger, while the others drink. The still water and reflections helped create a sense of calm, while the group itself brings energy and movement to the scene. For me, this painting was about celebrating one of
Australia’s most dazzling birds in a setting that feels both intimate and unmistakably part of the Australian interior.

The Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae) is one of Australia’s most striking native finches and is found in the tropical savannas of northern Australia. It is famous for its brilliant plumage and for the different head colours that can occur within the species, including red, black and yellow-orange. Gouldian Finches usually live in grassy woodlands and feed mainly on seeds, often gathering in flocks and visiting water regularly, especially in the dry season. Although small in size, they are among the most colourful birds in the world. Once abundant, Gouldian Finches have declined in parts of their range, making them a much-admired and important species in Australian birdlife.”
