Finch Country (Star Finches, Long-tailed Finch, Masked Finch and Double-barred Finches) Original Acrylic on Claybord 40.5cm x 30.3cm – SOLD
Greg’s Inspiration: “For this painting, I wanted to bring together several of the beautiful finches found near Timber Creek in the Northern Territory. The group includes Star Finches, a Long-tailed Finch, a Masked Finch and Double-barred Finches, gathered among the red rocks and spinifex of the region. Although each species has its own distinctive colours and markings, they share a delicacy of form and an intensely social nature. I wanted the composition to feel lively yet harmonious, with the birds appearing momentarily united against the warmth and ruggedness of the northern landscape.
Northern Australia supports a remarkable diversity of native grass finches. Star, Long-tailed, Masked and Double-barred Finches inhabit open woodland, savanna and grasslands around the Timber Creek region, where different species may gather together to feed or visit water. Their compact bodies and strong, conical bills are well suited to feeding on native grass seeds. Often encountered in pairs or small flocks, these finely patterned birds bring flashes of colour and constant movement to the dry northern landscape. Collectively, they embody the richness and variety of Australia’s tropical birdlife.”
