Regents of the Ranges (Regent Parrots) Original Acrylic on Claybord 50.5cm x 40.5cm – SOLD

Greg’s Inspiration: “For this painting, I wanted to portray a pair of Regent Parrots against the ancient, rugged landscape of the Stirling Ranges in Western Australia. The warm mauves, ochres and distant blues of the mountains create a dramatic setting for the birds’ brilliant yellow, green, red and deep blue plumage. I was particularly drawn to the contrast between the brightly coloured male and the more subtly patterned female. Perched together above the surrounding vegetation, they bring a sense of companionship and quiet majesty to the scene, their elegant forms seeming perfectly at home within this vast Western Australian landscape.

The Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus), is a large, slender parrot found in two separate populations across southern Australia. The western subspecies occurs in south-western Western Australia, inhabiting open forests, eucalypt woodlands and areas of mallee. Males are distinguished by their brilliant golden-yellow plumage, while females are predominantly olive-green, with both displaying colourful red and blue markings across their wings. They feed mainly on seeds, fruits, flowers and buds and are often encountered in pairs or small flocks. Graceful, vivid and unmistakable, the Regent Parrot is one of Australia’s most elegant parrots.”
