River Calling (Little Kingfishers) Original Acrylic on Claybord 28cm x 35cm

Natalie’s Inspiration: “Cute tiny jewels of the tropics as their name suggests, Little Kingfishers are the smallest species of Australian Kingfishers and the second-smallest Kingfisher in the world! They have been on my ‘to-do list’ for many years.  Being such tiny birds called for the tiniest of paint brushes in my brush collection to create this painting.  I wanted the birds to be the main focal point so I purposely chose to paint them on a flimsy dead twig, which is actually a preferred perch for these tiny birds to hunt. They are an aquatic kingfisher, diving for fish and small crustaceans. To set the scene, the background was airbrushed, the setting came from my own reference photos of a rainforest stream in north Queensland.

A big thank you to Imogen Warren for photographic reference of the birds”.
