Jewel of the Canopy (Scarlet Macaw) Original Acrylic on Claybord 46cm x 61cm

Greg’s Inspiration: ” I have always been drawn to the impressive size, beauty and intelligence of South American macaws, which are often seen as symbols of the region’s extraordinary biodiversity. For this painting, I wanted to celebrate the sheer colour and drama of the Scarlet Macaw. Its red, yellow and blue plumage has such an incredible presence, that I felt it needed an equally lush and expansive setting. I imagined the bird high above a tropical rainforest, surrounded by hanging plants, mosses and bright foliage, with the river winding through the forest below. I wanted the painting to feel warm, humid and alive — a glimpse into a rich rainforest world where this spectacular bird belongs.

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara maca), is one of the most recognisable parrots in the world, found through parts of Central and South America in tropical rainforest and woodland habitats. Known for its brilliant scarlet plumage, yellow wing patches and vivid blue flight feathers, it is a large, intelligent and highly social bird. Scarlet Macaws feed mainly on fruits, seeds and nuts, using their powerful beaks to crack open tough shells. They are often seen in pairs or family groups and form strong bonds with their mates. With its striking colours, long tail and commanding presence, the Scarlet Macaw is a true icon of the rainforest.”
