The Bond Beneath the Canopy (Rufous Fantails) Original Acrylic on Claybord 22.39cm x 30.5cm – SOLD
Greg’s Inspiration: “This painting was inspired by a pair of Rufous Fantails that I regularly see in a rainforest gully near where I live in southern Victoria. I wanted to capture these delicate and busy little flycatchers, and the intimate feeling of the forest understory — dark, lush and full of life, where small birds can feel just as dramatic and expressive as larger subjects. The Rufous Fantails immediately appealed to me because of their lively energy, rich colouring and that beautiful fan of the tail, which gives them so much character. I liked the idea of painting them as a pair, surrounded by moss, ferns and deep shadow, so the warmth of their plumage would glow against the darker setting. For me, this work was about celebrating the beauty and movement
of a small bird in a richly detailed native environment.
The Rufous Fantail, Rhipidura rufifrons, is a small flycatcher found in eastern and northern Australia, often in wetter forests, rainforest edges and dense gullies. It is well known for its restless movement, frequently flicking, spreading and fanning its tail as it hunts for insects through the foliage. Its warm rufous colouring, contrasting black-and-white markings and graceful tail make it one of Australia’s most charming small birds. Although delicate in size, the Rufous Fantail has a strong presence, bringing energy, elegance and a sense of life to the forest.”
