Twilight on Black Wings (Red-tailed Black-cockatoo) Original Acrylic on Claybord 46cm x 61cm
Greg’s Inspiration: “I wanted this Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo to feel almost regal, sitting high above the forest with the country stretching away behind it. The contrast was what really drew
me in — the deep, velvety blacks and blues of the bird against the soft pinks and purples of the evening sky. I also loved the idea of placing such a strong, striking bird among the textures of the Australian bush: lichen-covered branches, glossy leaves and rolling forested hills. It gives the painting a sense of stillness, but also wildness.
The Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) is one of Australia’s most distinctive cockatoos. It is known for its powerful beak, slow wingbeats and far-carrying calls. Males are mostly black with bold red panels in the tail, while females and younger birds often show yellow spotting and barring, especially around the head, chest and wings. These cockatoos are found across parts of northern, eastern and western Australia, usually in forests, woodlands and areas with suitable feeding trees. They feed on seeds, nuts and native fruits, using their strong beaks to crack into tough pods and cones. A bird of great presence, the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo carries both beauty and strength in equal measure.
