Stephen’s Inspiration: “The Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo is easily spotted while bird watching as they typically fly low in small groups often heard before being seen. It is seen as a significant spiritual symbol in Indigenous Australian culture, representing change, wisdom, and guidance, and is associated with auspicious outcomes and emotional freedom. My love for painting larger birds and bringing their essential beauty to life is the greatest gift I can share. The Male Yellow tail was such a joy to paint Capturing the differentiation of colour in his feathers that both reflect and absorbs light, highlights the yellow to bronze gold that are seen on the outer edgers on the feathers, giving it a scalloped appearance. Placing him on a broken tree branch that’s been partially stripped of its outer layer as he begins looking for some insect larvae that is found burrowed in the tree. Using his powerful beak, he can easily tear back the wood to find his favourite source of food. The yellow tail is a bird I will always love to paint”.
