Early one morning near Mudgee, on a rugged bush track along the Cudgegong River, Kevin Best found himself greeted by a striking and unexpected scene. Driving his red car through the thick scrub, just as the first light of day began to filter through the trees, a small herd of Hereford cattle emerged from the bush on his left. With their signature red eyes catching the dawn, and a sturdy old bull standing sentry, Kevin hesitated -unsure if the colour of his car might provoke a charge. It was the kind of encounter he relished, raw, natural and full of character. A stockman appeared behind the herd, calmly pushing them along. As the last of the cattle passed , Kevin waved. The stockman tipped his hat and returned the gesture. “It was a beaut start to the day,” Kevin later said and as always, he captured the moment – not just in memory but on canvas.
