Flight of the Spotted Eagle Rays (Lady Elliot Island) Original Oil on Canvas Board 61cm x 41cm
Robyn’s Inspiration: “These rays are to be found on the deeper side of Lady Elliot Island and I have to admit that the reference photos I used were taken by one of the diving instructors on Lady Elliot. The water is just too deep with a stronger current for my comfort. However, this painting was designed from quite a few different photos to produce the final result here. These Rays are such graceful creatures – flying like birds in the water. They have venomous spines on their tails that are used in defence against threats and can leap their entire bodies out of the water while swimming close to the surface. Spotted eagle rays grow to a maximum length of 5 metres, including the tail, and 230 kg. Their wingspan reaches a maximum width of 3 metres from tip to tip”.
