Smoky Cape in Bass Straight 91cm x 61cm Oil on stretched Canvas by Ian Hansen
“Smokey Cape” is the name of Ian’s 24’ yacht and this scene is from his return trip from Hobart’s Wooden Boat show where Ian took out first prize for his yacht being wooden and because Ian had sailed it so far for such a small craft. Ian says: “This painting of my vessel “Smoky Cape” is from a sketch in my log book when we were returning from the Hobart Wooden Boat Festival in 2017. The log entry reads 0740, 38 12’ S 149 55’E. Sailing in boisterous seas, wind WSW 20-30 knots, reefed main and 4 rolls in genoa.”
Ian Hansen wins the “President’s Medal with his Painting of Smokey Cape crossing Bass Straight” ‘It was with great pleasure that I announced, at the National Exhibition, that the President’s Medal has been awarded to Ian Hansen FASMA, FRAS. Ian’s wonderful painting Smoky Cape in Bass Strait depicts his return from the Australian Wooden Boat Festival at Hobart earlier this year. The drawing of the sea, atmospheric perspective, sensitive use of colour and the overall composition make this an extraordinary artwork. Ian’s placement of his yacht completes the narrative which immediately engages the viewer.’
Ian Hansen’s yacht, Smoky Cape, has an interesting history and has garnered recognition in various events. Smoky Cape was originally built for Jack Earl, one of the founding fathers of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA). Earl intended to use Smoky Cape to re-enact the final section of his historic circumnavigation, but this plan never materialized.
Ian and Kayelene Hansen purchased Smoky Cape in 2012 and have since lovingly restored her to Jack Earl’s high standards. The yacht has participated in several events, including winning the Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion award at the CYCA’s Parade of Sail.
