Heidi Willis is an entirely self-taught watercolour artist. Painting full-time since 2003, she has quickly established herself as one of Australia's emerging talents. At 34, her reputation as a natural history and botannical artist is well established and her works are often sold before completion. In 2004, Heidi had 20 works selected for her first 'Botanica' exhibition in the Sydney Botanic Gardens, selling thirteen of those works soon after the opening of the exhibition. Her work was purchased by Dr Shirley Sherwood for inclusion in the prestigious Shirley Sherwood Collection of international contemporary botanical artists. She was a finalist in the highly competitive Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, hosted by the South Australian Museum in 2004 and she was selected again for the 2006 exhibition. Producing her first graphite works in 2005, these works were both selected for the Margaret Flockton Award. The award, hosted by the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, recognises outstanding achievement in scientific botanical illustration and receives international submissions. Heidi won an award for 'excellence in botanical illustration' for her pencil work 'Eucalyptus cornuta' in 2005 and again in 2006 with her illustration of 'Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya Pine'. Recently she has had two paintings selected for the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation exhibition. This year she was also a finalist in the 'Focus On Nature IX' exhibition New York State Museum 2006, a Natural History Art Prize held in the New York State Museum. Her 'Kingfisher' painting was selected for the cover of the colour catalogue and exhibition posters. Heidi illustrates native and exotic plants, fruits and seed capsules, as well as portraits of Australia's unique and spectacular bird life. Her recognisable style can be applied to contemporary or traditional pieces, capturing the life and beauty in all her subjects. Her original artwork is now available at the Morpeth Gallery. A selection of Heidi's work is available in limited edition prints and can be purchased from the Shop Gallery. | |
